If there was ever a wedding that perfectly captured why I love shooting in the Mountains, let me just show you with Kyra and Mathew’s Intimate Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge wedding…
Nestled in the heart of Jasper National Park, surrounded by towering evergreens and snow-capped mountain peaks, their day felt peaceful from beginning to end. Spring had just begun to wake the Rockies, bringing the perfect balance of soft sunshine and gentle cloud cover that photographers dream about. The light stayed beautifully even all day, letting every emotion, every laugh, and every quiet glance take center stage.
One of my favourite pars of the day was how intentionally slow everything felt.
Instead of spending the morning in separate spaces, Kyra and Mathew chose to get ready together inside one of the cozy cabins at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Kyra sat by the large windows overlooking the trees, carefully doing her own makeup while the morning light poured in around her. It felt calm, familiar, and completely true to who they are. Across the room, Mathew was getting himself ready too—but not before starting his wedding day with what has to be one of the most memorable morning routines I’ve ever photographed: a plunge into Jasper’s icy glacial waters. Watching him emerge laughing, completely awake, before slipping into his suit was the perfect reminder that weddings don’t have to follow tradition to be meaningful. Throughout the morning they helped each other with the tiny finishing touches—the last button, straightening a collar, one final hug before heading out the door. Those quiet moments often become the ones couples treasure the most.
Before joining their family, they found a quiet spot overlooking the Jasper National Park mountains to exchange handwritten promises with nobody else around. There wasn’t an audience, no pressure to perform—just the two of them reading words they’d been waiting months to say. There were happy tears, nervous laughs, long pauses, and the kind of smiles that only happen when you completely forget a camera is nearby. Those moments are impossible to recreate, and they’re exactly why I believe some of the most meaningful parts of a wedding happen between the scheduled events.
After their private vows, everyone gathered together beneath one of the most breathtaking mountain backdrops imaginable for their ceremony. The panoramic views surrounding the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge never disappoint, but somehow they felt even more magical that afternoon. Of course, the real stars of the ceremony may have been their two adorable dogs, who stole more than a few hearts throughout the day. They wandered through portraits, joined family photos, and added the kind of joyful unpredictability that always makes a gallery feel more personal and real.
The evening carried that same intimate energy into dinner. Inside the lodge, soft candlelight, delicate floral arrangements, and elegant spring details created a cozy atmosphere for their closest family and friends. Dinner was incredible, but dessert quickly became the highlight of the evening. A stunning oversized tiramisu completely stole the show, looking almost too beautiful to cut into (almost). Alongside it sat a traditional wedding cake decorated with delicate cookie rings, continuing a family tradition that says however many cookies stay attached when you lift the top is the number of children you’ll have someday. Whether the tradition proves true or not, it created one of the sweetest and most laughter-filled moments of the night.
A wedding at theFairmont Jasper Park Lodge doesn’t need hundreds of guests or an elaborate timeline to feel unforgettable. Sometimes all you need is a quiet cabin, mountain views, your favourite people, two happy dogs, incredible food, and a wedding day that gives you room to actually soak it all in. Kyra and Mathew’s celebration was a beautiful reminder that the best wedding days aren’t about doing more—they’re about feeling more. As a documentary wedding photographer, these are exactly the kinds of stories I love preserving: honest moments, thoughtful details, and love that feels effortless against one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world.
